Image upscaling has a bad reputation — and most of it comes from people who've used the wrong tool or the wrong settings and gotten a blurry, plasticky result.
Done correctly, AI upscaling produces images that are genuinely sharper than the original. Not just bigger — sharper. With texture and detail that wasn't visible in the source file. Here's how to do it right.
Step 1: Start with the right source image
The single most important factor in upscaling quality is the quality of your source image. AI upscaling learns from what's there — so a clean, sharp source produces dramatically better results than a blurry or heavily compressed one.
Before upscaling:
- Use the highest quality version of the image you have (avoid double-compressed JPEGs)
- If the image has obvious JPEG artifacts (blocky edges, color banding near high-contrast areas), use the Photo Fix mode before upscaling — this removes artifacts so they don't get amplified
- For AI-generated images, always save the original output, not a re-downloaded or re-compressed version
Step 2: Choose the right scale factor
Don't automatically choose the highest scale. More scale isn't always better — it's a tradeoff between size and reconstruction accuracy.
Use 2x when: You need the image slightly larger for print, or want sharper edges without significant size increase.
Use 4x when: You're preparing for standard print formats (A4, letter, product packaging), or your source image is 512–768px and you need something print-ready.
Use 8x when: You're working with large-format print (posters, banners) and your source is at least 512px. This takes a 512px image to 4096px.
Use 16–28x when: You're upscaling for trade show displays, vehicle wraps, or building signage. At these scales, start from the highest-quality source possible.
Step 3: Choose the right upscaling preset
Different types of images upscale differently, and using the wrong preset is one of the most common mistakes.
- Photos preset: Designed for real-world photography — faces, landscapes, objects. Prioritizes texture fidelity and natural-looking detail reconstruction.
- Art & Illustration preset: Designed for painted or illustrated images. Preserves artistic strokes and reduces photorealistic over-sharpening.
- Anime & Cartoons preset: Optimized for flat-color cel-shaded art. Sharpens lines without adding unwanted texture.
- Text & Documents preset: Prioritizes edge sharpness and character legibility. Use for screenshots, UI captures, and document scans.
Choosing a Photo preset for an illustrated image will add fake texture. Choosing an Art preset for a photograph will soften detail that should be sharp. Match the preset to your content.
Step 4: Check the result before exporting
Zoom into a detail-rich area at 100% before downloading. Look for:
- Edge sharpness: Text and hard edges should be clean, not haloed or blurry
- Texture authenticity: Fabric, skin, and foliage should look natural, not plastic
- Artifact-free: No grid patterns, color fringing, or compression artifacts in smooth areas
If something looks off, try a different preset first before re-upscaling.
Step 5: Export in the right format
- PNG: Lossless. Use for images going into other design tools, or anything you'll edit further. Preserves all upscaled detail.
- JPEG: Smaller file size. Use for web delivery or situations where file size matters more than absolute quality. Export at 90–95% quality minimum.
- WebP: Best of both — smaller than PNG, higher quality than JPEG at the same file size. Ideal for web use.
Never save a high-quality upscaled image as a low-quality JPEG. You've done the hard work of recovering detail — don't throw it away in the final export step.
What actually makes AI upscaling better than resize
The key difference is that AI upscaling adds information, while resize only rearranges what's already there.
When you upscale a 512px image to 2048px:
- Resize (bicubic): Creates 3 new pixels between every existing pixel by mathematically interpolating. The result is smoother but inherently blurrier — no new information was created.
- AI upscaling: Analyzes the entire image, recognizes patterns (skin texture, fabric weave, foliage, architectural lines), and reconstructs high-frequency detail consistent with those patterns. The result is genuinely sharper because the model knows what that detail should look like.
This is why AI upscaling at 4x looks better than resize at 4x — and why it looks significantly better than resize at 8x, where the quality gap becomes dramatic.
