Models: Hunyuan 3D vs. Trellis 2

Hunyuan 3D

Developed by Tencent, Hunyuan 3D excels at objects with clear, distinct shapes — products, vehicles, furniture, architectural elements, and stylized characters. It produces clean mesh topology suitable for game engines and rendering software. Best for: product visualization, architectural elements, and any well-defined object with geometric clarity.

Trellis 2

Trellis 2 handles organic shapes and complex textures better than Hunyuan 3D. It excels at natural objects, characters, creatures, and anything where surface texture matters as much as form. Best for: characters, organic shapes, natural objects (rocks, trees, food), and texture-rich models.

Text-to-3D: Writing Effective Prompts

1

Describe the object clearly

"A modern wooden chair with metal legs, Scandinavian design" is specific enough to generate a usable model. "A chair" produces something generic. Specificity helps.

2

Specify materials

Materials define surface appearance: "brushed aluminum," "matte plastic," "polished oak," "worn leather." AI 3D models with specified materials produce textures that match expectations.

3

Describe the style

"Low-poly game asset," "photorealistic product render," "stylized cartoon character," "architectural model." The style influences mesh density and texture realism.

Image-to-3D: Converting a Photo to a 3D Model

Both models support image-to-3D: upload a clear photo of an object (isolated on a white or neutral background works best) and the model generates a 3D version.

Post-Processing in Blender

AI-generated 3D models are excellent starting points but typically require refinement before production use. Blender (free, open source) is the standard tool for this:

  1. Import the GLB or OBJ file into Blender
  2. Clean up mesh topology: merge vertices, remove doubles, fix inverted normals
  3. Refine UVs for texture work
  4. Export in your final target format
Workflow Note

AI 3D generation is most useful for concept exploration and rapid prototyping. For hero-level production assets (game characters, film-quality props), use AI generation to create a base mesh and spend refinement time in Blender or Maya rather than starting from scratch.
